Comparative Analysis of Evacuation Safety in Nursing Hospital under Korean and Chinese Standards
Abstract
This study presents a comparative analysis of Required Safe Egress Time in a nursing hospital setting, utilizing
stochastic occupant models derived from both Chinese (GB/T 10000-2023) and Korean (Performance-Based
Design Evaluation Guidelines) anthropometric standards. While previous research often assumes standardized
occupant profiles, this paper investigates how inherent differences in population body dimensions and
movement speeds between the two countries can lead to divergent safety assessments. Using Pathfinder
agent-based simulation, we evaluated four evacuation scenarios, including the strategic addition of external
ramps on various floors. The results reveal that evacuation times based on Korean anthropometric parameters
are consistently and significantly shorter than those based on Chinese parameters across all scenarios, with the
maximum discrepancy reaching 23.8% in the most optimized ramp configuration. Our findings underscore that
incorporating nation-specific occupant data is crucial for performance-based design, particularly in facilities
for the elderly. Furthermore, the study confirms that adding external ramps is a highly effective strategy for
enhancing evacuation safety, regardless of the standard applied. This cross-national comparison provides
valuable insights for internationalizing building safety codes and optimizing nursing hospital design for
specific demographic groups.
