Toxicity Assessment of Stack Gas Emissions from Boryeong Thermal Power Plant


Abstract Since the completion of Unit 1 in December 1983, B Thermal Power Plant has played a key role in supporting national economic growth by ensuring a stable power supply. Given the increasing environmental concerns regarding air pollutants, we aimed to quantitatively assess the toxic hazards of emissions from the plant’s stacks. In this study, we utilized the ALOHA program and implemented a vertical matrix analysis to perform a detailed evaluation. We particularly focused on comparing the Heavy Gas model, which assumes gravitational slumping, with the Gaussian model, which accounts for atmospheric turbulence, to better simulate high-temperature gas behavior. Our simulation results indicated that the Gaussian model more reliably represents physical phenomena for 150m stack emissions. By comparing emission scenarios from 2015 and 2024, we confirmed that the toxic impact zones have been substantially reduced following the decline in emission volumes. We interpret these findings as practical environmental improvements resulting from the phased decommissioning of aging facilities, the operation of high-efficiency plants, and the use of advanced desulfurization and dust collection systems. This research serves as a scientific validation of air pollution reduction policies and provides foundational data for future sustainable air quality management.
